FLCL focuses on Naota, a twelve-year-old boy in 6th grade attending Mabase Elementary School and lives in Mabase, a quiet city in the middle of Japan where nothing much happens (Though there is not much to look forward there he just doesn’t know it). His brother a baseball phenomenon has gone to United States to play baseball, but Naota resents that he has gone. His brother leaves behind his ditsy, 17-year old "girlfriend" who latches onto Naota and "cuddles" with him maybe to replace his brother who is cheating on her in America. Even with something like that, his life is boring and uneventful, that is until she shows up. Naota's bland life is turned upside down when a crazy 19-year old woman charges in on her Vespa and inadvertently runs Naota over only to whack him in the forehead with a left-handed Rickenbacker bass guitar with a chainsaw start motor. The hit leaving a very strange horn which is a portal, N.O is what lets items be pulled out of characters' foreheads to transport objects over long distances usually sprouting robots. N.O is activated from extreme scenarios including stress and jeously. Naota's N.O. is responsible for the appearance of; Canti, Naota's Guitar, Atomsk's Gibson, three M.M. robots, and in the end, Atomsk himself. The woman, who calls herself Haruko, later becomes a maid for Naota's guy-only family, though she doesn't help out much. Haruko is really is a cop fighting a company named Medical Mechanica (whose building looks like a giant clothes iron) in Mabase. Naota lives with his lecherous zine making father Kamon and his pervert baseball-coaching grandfather, Shigekuni at their family bakery. Thing get crazy when Naota is being watched by a man named Commander Amarao, who with his assistant, Lt. Kitsurubami, have become involved with Haruko and Medical Mechanica for intergalactic legal reasons, and are attempting to save the earth by stopping both Haruko and Medical Mechanica. FLCL also involves Mamimi, a socially delinquent girl who used to be Tasuku's girlfriend. Alone and friendless, she leans on other things, such as Naota or her pet cat, all of whom she calls "Ta-kun." eventually leaning on the terminal core a dog looking robot that eat motor bikes and cell phone. Canti a robot with a television set for a head that pop out from Naota head. Canti manufactured by M.M becomes a servant for Naota family doing delivery jobs for them. Naota also has friends Eri Ninamori, Naota's classmate. She is the daughter of the mayor of Mabase who is in a scandal for adultery and class president. She has a crush on Naota. Another friend is Gaku a hyperactive, obsessed with sex. Masashi who has a job and drives a truck which is a grown up thing to do still acts like a kid the opposite of Naota.
